My friend here in Michigan asked if I’d be interested in helping her build some side tables. She found the building plans from Ana White – if you’ve never been to her website it is great! I’ve built a few things (desk and bench) from her plans already and have always been happy with the end result!
We went to Lowe’s and got all our wood, paint, stain, screws, hardware, etc. It ended being about $130 for everything to make 2 side tables.
We pulled all my tools outside and got to work.
Kate marked the wood while I cut on the table saw.
We followed the plans but ended up not having enough pieces once we started building. You’ll want to double check with the plans and make the necessary cuts.
We assembled in my living room.
It took as about 6 hours and big messes to get to this point!

Did a few coats of paint and had to get more paint!
Next day… sanded and did more paint!
Kate does an awesome job at glaze paint – we did grey and it added a little bit of color to paint and especially creases.
Next we put felt pads on the bottom of the legs, attached the tops and shelves and put the drawers in for doing some Polyurethane.
We goofed around too.
A coat of Poly, sanding, Poly, sanding and Poly again we were done. The finishing touch is the hardware!
I love the drawers. I’ve never made a drawer before and really liked that the plan didn’t call for drawer slides – it’s just wood on wood.
We worked over 3 days for a total of about 14 hours. It was a lot of work and time but we learned in the process and had fun!
