The Family Bernina

Meet my Grandma – G’ma Joan.  I made purses with her while I was in Utah.  I just had to take a picture with her working on this machine, a 1944 Bernina-530.  It was her machine in 1969 when she bought it used when it was already 25-years-old!  That makes it 66-years-old!  My mother was in 4th grade at the time and learned to sew from my G’ma.  My mom first made Barbie clothes and used it throughout her school years and asked if she could have the Bernina as a graduation present.

When my mom got married she made her wedding dress, the bridesmaid dresses, little girl dresses, and the serving aprons.
She still sews on it to this day and has never owned a different sewing machine.  It’s also the machine I learned to sew on.  It’s been in the family for years and is still more powerful than any machine I’ve ever had.  I love that old thing!

That is pretty amazing. You look like your mom so much. Do you look like your grandma also?

What a cute post! I loved it. I remember your parent's wedding reception. Jenifer and I ran around like little stinkers. I think we tipped over a plant or something. I loved my rabbit muff though!

I love Berninas! I got my Bernina a couple of years after I got married so it's got to be 36 or 37 years old. It's still going strong. I love it! My Mom got hers when I was in 9th grade so it's got to be about 43 or so years old. I made my wedding dress on my Mom's Bernina too. People who buy Berninas don't ever NEED to get a new machine but they may WANT to get a new one. And of course it would be a new Bernina! Love your tribute to Berninas! LOL

Danielle, your grandma showed us your post. I thought my mom's 35-year-old bernina was old; I was wrong! That is crazy how old it is. What a great investment. I have always wanted to get a Bernina…when my $100 Singer croaks that is what I'll have to upgrade to.
